A pursuit of a man accused of kidnapping a 12-year-old girl ended when he collided with a police car, disabling both vehicles, Utah authorities reported.
A man in his 20s drove away with the girl in his 2011 Chevrolet Camaro after being confronted by her family in Bountiful at 12:21 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, police said in a news release.
“After the family came out to see why their daughter was outside for so long, they found her inside of a car with this male,” Lt. Andrew Smith of the Bountiful Police Department told KUTV. The man then fled.
An Amber Alert was issued for the girl, KSTU reported.
The two had met on social media, police told KUTV.
Officers spotted the Camaro at 8:06 a.m in the neighborhood where the abduction took place, police said. The driver began driving erratically when police began to follow him.
A high-speed chase ensued on nearby interstate highways, police said.
The driver lost control and rear-ended a Woods Cross police vehicle, disabling both vehicles, police said.
Police arrested the injured man, whom they did not identify, and found a pistol on the floorboard of the Camaro, officers said. The girl was taken to a hospital but was uninjured by the crash.
Bountiful is about a 10-mile drive north from Salt Lake City.
